Basingstoke High Street
Case Study
Location: Basingstoke, Hampshire
Client: Hampshire County Council
Value: Circa £110,000
Date: Completed 2023
The Old High Street area, located just north of Festival Place in Basingstoke, is a historic and vibrant shopping district. It experiences high footfall and encounters significant challenges associated with a large volume of pedestrians. Additionally, the street is heavily trafficked for deliveries and maintenance purposes, requiring robust block paving that can withstand these demands effectively.
The current footway comprised 80mm thick pavers placed on a layer of 90mm sharp sand. However, this existing surface has significantly deteriorated to an unsafe condition, posing risks such as tripping hazards and uneven blocks.
To prevent future depressions within the wheel lines, we implemented a custom concaved concrete screed. This measure was undertaken to ensure the long-term stability and durability of the paved area.
By incorporating a concrete base screed, we aimed to minimize any potential disruptions caused by wheel traffic and maintain a smooth and even surface.
In order to minimize disturbance to the local shops and adhere to Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines, we strategically positioned all noise and dust-producing activities away from the immediate vicinity.
Additionally, we implemented sound reduction systems to ensure compliance with HSE regulations. By adopting these measures, we aimed to mitigate any potential negative impacts on the surrounding businesses and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all parties involved.
The project was delivered on time and to budget for the client even with some significant design changes whilst on site.
