The railway allotment footway is a remote footway in Basingstoke that services a large business industrial park, railway station and general pedestrian traffic from the local housing estate.
The footway can only be accessed from 3 points and is over 900m long totalling over 2500sqm in surface area.
The existing footway consisted of 50mm thick council style slabs that had been laid on 90mm of sharp sand, the existing surface had deteriorated to an unsafe level with trips and drops in the slabs.
We used specialised powered equipment to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our staff, the distances required to move material would have been detrimental if done by manual labour.
We phased the project around the large volumes of pedestrians that needed constant access to the business and station.
Safe passage was created for both pedestrians and construction plant by creating a temporary walkable surface, that allowed us to segregate both people and plant to remove this risk.
Working with our client to meet their green initiatives we used over 300t of cold recycled binder and because of its cementitious nature it removes the need for a virgin sub base.
Despite its logistical difficulties the entire project was carried out within the required timescale and to the budget set by the client.
